Can we always distinguish between the things in our control and the things outside our control, as the Stoics believe?

By Chris Graham <collge-guy@inetgenesis.com>

The question before me is, "Can we always distinguish between the things in our control and the things outside our control, as the Stoics believe?" The answer in this question lies within another question. This question being, "What, really, is in our control?" In order for something to be controlled, it must be within the ability for someone to purposefully change it. For, if someone cannot change it, either its action or intent, it cannot be controlled.
This leads us to our original question. The answer I believe is simple. If one wishes to know if he is in control of an object or situation, all he must do is ask himself if there is something he can do to change the object or situation. If there is something he can do, he is in control of that aspect of his life. If there is nothing he can do, if he is helpless, then he is not in control. So, the answer is yes. We can distinguish between the things in our control, and the things outside of our control.

Nice work. I agree, there are things in our control.

I believe that there are things that elude our perceptions of control as yet. We mistakenly believe we have, or do not have, control when the transverse is true. But for now, we'll have to do with what we know.
