Should We Act Morally Because of Divine Will?

By Karen Long <karen_long@email.com>

Since children we have all been told to always "be good," but why? What satisfaction do we receive, if any, from it? Are we afraid of what will happen to us if we are "bad?" Yes, we are. Why? Because we have been told that if we are good little girls or boys, then God will reward us. But should be try to act morally solely because of this?

If you really look at it, by acting morally because of divine will, we are trying to secure rewards for our moral efforts. In all reality, we act morally out of selfishness. We want what is best for us. We want the best that the after-life can give us, so we work towards that. Do you really think that we would be good if we were told that no matter how good we are in life, we were going to hell? There would be even more chaos in his already screwed up world.

I've gotten off subject, but there is really no way to act morally solely due to divine will, because, as in the above mentioned paragraphs, we act morally out of selfishness. Should we act morally because of divine will? Is it wrong to live life this way? Certainly not, but, personally, I feel that we should act morally for this life, not what we hope lies ahead. I try to treat others nicely because I like to be treated nicely.

What about religion? Again, for most people, this results in trying to secure a good reward for the after-life. Some do act morally because they feel it is what "God" wants them to do, and by being followers, they practice the art of morality; but there is hardly any way to truly act morally because of divine will when our own selfishness gets in the way.

**If I have offened anyone during the reading of this paper, I apoligize dearly, this was not my intent. This is merely my opinion of the matter at hand. Again, I am sorry if I stepped on any toes.

I think you have a point here. There are many people who act good just because of what thay was told would happen to them if they didn't. If these things wasn't told to them they wouldn't be trying to do good in that sitution.

Matt Wright <surfski8@hotmail.com>

i agree completely with what you have stated

Amanda Thompson <amandat211@yahoo.com>

I agree w/ your paper completely. I think that people act out of selfishness most of the time, even when they are unaware of it.

Eric Howell <grayghost13@hotmail.com>

Wow. That was a neat paper. Interesting ideas and Points. Good Job!

Danny Frady <garydfrady@hotmail.com>

I agree, many people are looking out for number one.

Kimberly Pitts <KLP103@hotmail>

I agree! I believe we should all act morally but don't because of divine command but simply because its right.

Travis Galloway <hyperdedo@hotmail.com>

Nice points... Religion has always been used as a shield or armour for those who are merely afraid of dying... Religeous leaders often use this to control the masses... In this way, being moral by Divine Will is a way for others to use your morals against you,,, There needs to be more justification for being moral than simply this...

I really agree with that second paragraph you wrote. This is something that I struggle with a lot. Am I doing what is right BECAUSE it's right, or for selfish reason of wanting to go to Heaven?? I guess it's a little of both for me.

Missy Kergosien <missc4@hotmail.com>

I agree; peoples actions are driven by selfish motives.

Will Mulkey <wrmulkey@hotmail.com>

I'm not so sure that people act morally out of selfish reasons. Some do, but not the majority. I agree with you that I act the way I do out of respect for others and because it's "right", not because I'm looking for a ticket to heaven. You asked if we would be good even if we knew we were going to hell- I think many of us would. Look at the opposite- many people are evil even though they know because of it they will not go to heaven. Good Paper!

I agree with your paper also and believe that people, most of the time act out of sefishness

nichole vernon <nichole317@excite.com>

i absolutely agree with you and you made your points very clear.

Tally_Loyd <Tally_Loyd>

I concur with your essay when you state that acting morally due to divine will is selfish (selfish by acting solely to secure a place in heaven), but isn't also acting morally for any other reason being selfish. Is there such a thing as true altruism, and if so, is it conducive to our existence or our quality of life? Why is being selfish considered to be so bad... or even immoral?
Good paper.

Heather Ferguson <addysmomF@netscape.net>

I agree, you made valid points! Good work!

Cindy Bourret <lucy12241979>

The paper had some good points to it. Good Job!

jason stansill <jasonstansill@hotmail.com>

I realy enjoyed your paper. I personaly don't believe in God, and I liked how you looked at this topic from all sides instead of comming right out and take a purely religist stance.

Wendy Garner <wlg51@backroads.net>

Good point. I think that it a combination of several things way a person acts morally

Matt Culbertson <mculbertson@hspower.com>

You did a good job of supporting your ideas. If it is wrong to be moral to go to Heaven, should we be immoral and go to Hell just for the sake of not being selfish? Just a thought to be a "devil's advocate".

Chris Graham <collge-guy@inetgenesis.com>

Great paper! You made good points

Eric Doyle Knight <frruita@hotmail.com>

I think you have good points. Selfishness and true motives are important things to consider. I found Travis's point about divine will as control mechanism insightful, as well as Tally's idea about altruism and selfishness. I also think there is something to be said about other possible motivators: fear, i.e. Hell as scare tactic; love,i.e. doing what God says out of love (and then, should love --> obedience); fear of choice and man's need to have things decided for him/her (maybe fear of making wrong choice). Overall good paper.

Cynthia Glanton <cynthia_glanton@hotmail.com>

Good ideas. I do agree with what you said.

Chad Williams <czm_1@hotmail.com>

Offended? Should I have been? Hmm...Ok. Grrr.
