WebCT:
How to Log In to WebCT for the First Time

[Updated for new WebCT Server 10.10.06]

1. Open your Internet browser (e.g., Internet Explorer™, Netscape®, or Firefox). and enter the exact address: http://luwebct2.lander.edu:8900/ in the Address or Location Bar.  Notice  that there is no "www" in this Internet address (URL) and, unlike most other email addresses, you have to type in the "http://" prefix to navigate to the WebCT Homepage.  Be sure to include the colon ":" in front of the 8900 number; however, the trailing forward-slash at the end of the address "/" is optional.

You can also access this page clicking the  bold blue hyperlink in the paragraph above.  A third way to access the WebCT Homepage is via  Lander University's WebCT page.

2. When the "WebCT Homepage" loads, the name under the address bar is the "Entry Page."  Click on the bold blue hyperlink entitled " Log in to" in order to load the next screen.

3. The next page,  titled at the extreme top of the screen,  the "WebCT Login Page,"  has the name just below the address bar in the gold stripe of "Login to WebCT."  Enter your Lander L-number in the WebCT ID box (for example, L00999999 and your six digit password in the Password Box. Then click the gray "Log in" button.

.

4. After the gray "Log in" button is clicked, your "my WebCT" page will load with the word " Welcome"  in front of your name. If your "myWebCT" course page loads with your list of courses already listed, then skip steps 5 and 6 below and continue with step 7 .

Note: Steps 4 through 6 are not available at this time--Students are not presently allowed to register themselves for WebCT courses.

If your courses are not listed on your "myWebCT" page,  then  click the "Add Course" button in order to load the next page from which you can add the WebCT courses for which you have registered.

5.When the "WebCT Course List" page loads, scroll down to the course or courses you wish to add.  If a course has a "i" button corresponding to its name, you can obtain preliminary information about that course by clicking the icon. To begin the process of adding the course simply click the "+" button .

6. To add the course, enter your WebCT username and password in the boxes provided and click the "Continue" button. If a page loads with the error message "Login failed": "You have entered an invalid User Name and Password for this course," then you need to contact Lander's Instructional Technology Manager for assistance.  The Instructional Technology Manager will add your username and password to the WebCT database  if you are registered for the course.

7. When your "myWebCT" personal "Courses" page loads, the list of courses in which you are currently enrolled should appear. Click on the blue hyperlink description of each course in order to access the  course materials on each course's Homepage. The icons under each course description  indicate new information and postings in your course pages since your last visit.

[Note:  the feature of changing your password described in step 8 and step 9  has not been implemented as of 01.10.06 since the new WebCT server is in the process of being configured by the IT staff. Skip to step 10.]

8.  For security reasons, especially in this age of identity theft, it's a good idea to change your password at least once a semester.  Also, of course your grades and personal information should be kept secure. To accomplish the password change,  simply click on the "Password Settings" button on your "myWebCT" page where your WebCT courses are listed.

9. When the "Change Password" page loads, enter your old password twice, and then enter your new password. Be sure to keep a copy of your new password in a locked, secure place.  If you do not have a secure place, you can record the password as a simple transposition encryption called a "Sliding Scale Cryptograph." Just advance each number a specific amount and record the result.  For example,  the password "010184" (for, say a family member's birthday" should not be used as is but could be recorded in a purse, wallet, password-protected MS Word Document, or PDA as "343417" where each item in the original password has been shifted an arbitrary  three numbers, as indicated in the following table.

Password Sliding Scale Cryptograph

user password 0 1 0 1 8 4
1 2 1 2 9 5
2 3 2 3 0 6
 recorded password 3 4 3 4 1 7

Since the Lander network does not have secure connections, it's a good idea to change your password once a semester unless you have a history of forgetting not writing down a coded version of the password.  In spite of these precautions, if you lose your password, you may request a new one from the Instructional Technology Manager .

10. You can access your  "myWebCT" page with your course listings at any time you are logged in to WebCT by clicking on the "myWebCT" link in the gold menu bar at the top of the page.  To view all course information, click on the blue hyperlink in the course listing on your "myWebCT" page, and the Homepage of the course you clicked will load.  From this page you can access all course materials by clicking on the links in the course menu in the sidebar or the links in the middle of the screen prepared by the instructor.
