Philosophy 203:   Scientific Reasoning
Fallacies, Part I

Directions:  Identify the fallacy in each of the following passages.  The fallacies might include equivocation, begging the question, complex question, division, or composition.

1.  Since the planets of the solar system are round in shape, we can safely conclude that the atoms which make up those planets are also round in shape.

2.  Criminal actions are proceedings in a court of law, and murder, robbery, and burglary are criminal actions, so murder, robbery, and burglary are proceedings in a court of law.

3.  Since the mind comes from a brain composed of complex molecules, I infer that mental events in it are no more than complex molecules also.

4.  I can see that you are impressed with the AX-660 Personal Computing System.  So I'll charge it to your account if you do not want the installment plan.

5. Since I have called this committee together, I am to be the Chairperson.  The reason this honor is to be bestowed upon me is that I have taken the time and effort to convene the committee.
